One day a nun from the Abbey was driving home. It was a warm day and in the middle of the road she saw a lizard sun-baking. She pulled over and saw that, thankfully, it was still alive - it hadn’t been run over. She knew if it stayed there it would get squashed so she got a stick and tried to shoo it over to the paddock by the side of the road. But it didn’t want to go! Another car came by and slowed down. The lady in the car said, “Are you ok?” and the nun said, “Yes, I’m trying to get him off the road!” The lady smiled. “Good on you!” she said, “But don’t let him bite you!” The lizard had very hard scales and a stubby little tail, and as the lady drove away, he kept turning and opening his mouth to reveal a triangular blue tongue! Sometimes he hissed too. Strangely, a couple of cyclists came by and stopped, taking photos of the lizard. And then a man in a small truck stopped and got out. He was wearing an OM around his neck, and said that he saved a lot of lizards all the time. He picked up the shingle-backed skink and the cyclists took more photos! Finally, the man put the skink safely in the paddock and everyone said goodbye and thanks!!! As the nun left, she wondered if the skink was an emanation of the Buddha, bringing all these people together to do such a good thing - help to save a life!!! ....What do you think? |
